Waldorf East Conference: June 23-25

with Storyteller Dawne McFarlane
June 23-25

at the South Shore Waldorf School & Kindergarten

“Our brains are hard-wired for stories. Narrative is the basic organizing principle for memory. It’s a great way to teach. Everyone loves a story,” says Storyteller and Waldorf educator Dawne McFarlane, keynote speaker at Waldorf East’s 8th June Conference at the South Shore Waldorf School on Friday June 23 – 25.

McFarlane has delighted audiences at festivals in Toronto and Vancouver and as far away as Scotland and Iceland.

This will be her first appearance in Eastern Canada. The recipient of several grants and awards, McFarlane currently edits Pippin, the newsletter of Storytelling Toronto.

The conference begins Friday evening at 7:30 with a talk and performance by Dawne McFarlane and continues for full day talks and workshops on Saturday and Sunday.

From parent-toddler classes through the grades and high school, students in over 2000 worldwide Waldorf schools are immersed in stories. From simple nature stories in the early childhood, world mythology and history in elementary classes, biographies of thinkers, writers, inventors, and world leaders in high school, Waldorf teachers present the curriculum through stories spoken aloud rather than written or on screen. All subjects, from math to science to history to art to handwork, are introduced through storytelling.

The conference includes choices from 12 workshops including among others: how to make up stories on the spot, discovering the story a rock can reveal, simple puppetry, and creating stories with others through movement.

The cost is $150 for the full weekend, $100 a day for Saturday or Sunday, and $25 for individual workshops. Snacks and lunch are included. Childcare is available at additional cost.
