A Puppet Story for Mayfair
by Karin Jones Bobadis was a great man who did not say much. He didn't need to. All the animals knew him and he was kind and gentle. He walked very softly on the earth and only his cape made a whispering noise behind him. Occasionally a bird would travel on his shoulder or a rabbit might jump on his cape for a ride. Bobadis was familiar with the land and rivers and forests. When he raised his arms the wind would listen and when it rained he cried to keep the rain company. He carried feathers in one hand and stones in the other. The farthest Bobadis had travelled was to the great tree stump, Know-it-All, and beyond was the mountain of light. On a fine day in May, Bobadis set foot toward the mountain of light. He turned over four stones. One to the East, one to the South, one to the West and one to the North. With all the directions he could not get lost. "But I am missing something" he said and not knowing what it was he called his friend the Wind. "Wind, I need you," he called and as he raised his arms, Wind joined him for his adventure. His walk to the mountain. Together they walked toward Know-it-All, the great tree stump. At Know-it-All Bobadis gave his old friend a great hug.
"Greetings old Know-it-All. We travel to the mountain of light. I…," began Bobadis but he stopped feeling a little uncertain. "Oh, I am tired. I think I will nap here." And he made himself comfortable at the foot of Know-it-All. While he slept, he had a dream, and the great tree stump spoke to him:
When Bobadis awoke from his sleep he found he was reluctant
to begin his walk again. He was uncertain. Then he remembered his dream.
"…Around me thrice is the choice that's right." And around
the girth of the great stump he walked three times.
With the last turn behind him he began his journey again, ready to meet the mountain of light. The mountain glowed, beckoning him on, and he took step. After a while Bobadis stopped and wanted to turn back. This land was so strange. Wind had chased some clouds so Bobadis was alone. But as he looked back at great stump Know-it-All he remembered his dream again and said the words out loud.
He heard the words echo and turned to face the mountain, but the echo said,
So Bobadis waved back at Know-it-All and continued up the mountain of light. As he approached the top the mysterious light glowed and music could be heard. The Firekeepers were singing. The fire in the mountain was strong and warm and it filled his heart
and hands and head. Up came Rabbit, Bird, Worm Child, and Ducking. Big Dog and Red Fox came too, and faeries flew around while some gnomes listened from inside the mountain.
With the whole party assembled on top of the mountain, Wind returned from playing tag with the clouds. An orange light flew up in sparks and showered everyone, and Bobadis found what he was missing. Some fire to give him courage. |
