In 1996 the South Shore Waldorf School & Kindergarten first opened its doors on an organic family farm in Conquerall Mills, NS. Five years later, the school and kindergarten moved to a century old school house in Blockhouse, NS, carefully and lovingly renovated by the families and friends of the School.

The School was founded by a handful of families looking for 'something more' for their children. It now offers a parent-tot program, a kindergarten program (ages 4-6), and grades 1 through 6.

The Waldorf curriculum promotes well-rounded development in children by exposing them to a wide variety of subjects using an interdisciplinary approach that complements the students natural abilities. Waldorf education allows for a meaningful learning process by engaging the whole child. The children develop their thinking and feeling, and a sense of purpose.

Spirituality

Waldorf families come from various religious and cultural backgrounds. The curriculum is not based on a particular religious doctrine. Rather, it is based on the belief that there is a spiritual dimension to each human being that also requires nurturing.

Transition to and from public school

Children can enter the South Shore Waldorf School at every grade level. The teachers conduct interviews with the children and their parents to assess what is needed for a good transition. For several years now, students have graduated from the South Shore Waldorf School and gone on to public school without difficulty, socially or academically. Some have entered programs such as French Immersion and/or continued into the IB Program at Parkview.

Affordability

School and Kindergarten are entirely self-funded through tuition and various fundraising activities. Donations are tax deductible. However, no child is being denied a Waldorf Education for financial reasons. Our Finance Committee meets with each family each year and discusses the needs of the School and the family and makes a tuition adjustment as necessary.
