The Shepherds’ Play dates from Medieval times and has its origin as a Miracle Play, traditionally performed on the island of Oberufer on the Danube River.

The play was loved by Rudolf Steiner, who recognized its gentle humour and deep reverence as a way to bring the birth of the Baby Jesus in story form especially suitable for children.

Translated from Austrian into many, many languages, the play has been performed in Waldorf Schools, Bio-dynamic farms, Camphill communities, and other Anthroposophically inspired initiatives around the world for almost 100 years.

Parents, friends, teachers, students and former students of South Shore Waldorf performed the play for  every year from 2005 to 2019. This year’s performance is its first revival since Covid.

The play is less than an hour long and is followed by a small social gathering to meet the cast.
